Kerala Verma Government Higher Secondary School Eriyad was started as a primary School in 1921 by Manapat Kunhumohamed Haji when he was only 30 yrs old,much against opposition from the orthodoxy and even against his own father. It was the beginning of the long and tortuous road to empowerment of Muslims and other backward communities of Kerala and the acorn of the social refornist movement called Aikya Sangham.The School was handed over to the Cochin State and was upgraded to a High School in 1946.All students irrespective of caste & genter were given "mid-day meal"along with book and writing material.This School along with the AIMUP School at Eriyad were the first of about 1500 such schools started under the aegis of Aikya Sangham in Cochin and Malabar in the beginning of 20th century.
