Church of the Acheiropoietos (Thessaloniki)

Greece / Thessaloniki / Thessaloniki / Agias Sofias, 56
basilica, orthodox christianity, byzantine, interesting place, UNESCO World Heritage Site, Greek Orthodox Church, 5th century constructions

Built in the middle of the 5th century AD, it is the best preserved early Christian basilica in Greece. It was built at the place of a Roman bath, of which part of the mosaic floor can be seen in the north aisle. The name (= not made by hand) comes from an icon of Virgin Mary, worshiped in it at least until the 15th century, which was believed to have been created by miracle, without the intervention of human hand.
It was the first church of Thessaloniki to be converted to a mosque, the day the city was taken by the Ottoman Turks in 1430, an event commemorated by an inscription curved on one of the columns of the north aisle.
The monument preserves some of its original mosaic decoration.
