Southernmost Point Buoy Marker

Southernmost Point Buoy Marker

The marker, built to resemble a buoy, is intended to represent the Southernmost point in the Continental United States accessible by the public. Key West is known by the nickname of "The Southernmost City". The monument notes that Cuba is only 90 miles away, and just to its right, a plaque commemorates the brave Cubans who have drowned trying to get to America, "The Leader In Democracy." In the blocks around the Monument are numerous other "Southernmosts" — hotel, house, restaurant, etc.

Though the marker is located here, at the end of Whitehead St., the true southernmost point is further southwest on the dredge/fill land known as Truman Annex. But the marker's cool anyway.
