C & O Canal Monocacy Aqueduct

Largest of eleven C&O Canal aqueducts, located at mile 42.2. Finished 1833, Alfred Cruger, Principal Engineer. Constructed of quartzite from Sugarloaf Mountain. It served until 1824, when after a flood, commercial operations ceased. Administered by the National Park Service.

Confederate Gen. D.H. Hill crossed into Maryland at Point of Rocks and breached and drained sections of the Canal while burning Canal boats and destroying houses. When they got here they did not have enough gunpowdeer to damage the Aqueduct. A week later Gen. John Walker's Division spent time attempting to destroy it but were unable to do so.
