Actually, yes we are a speed trap! But in fact, the reason AAA considers us a speed trap is that fines are used for radar equipment upgrades! We the people of Lawtey do not directly benefit from any of your fines. Our town is practically a ghost town with only the residents of about 2 miles diameter city limits having true public utilities. The police chief is supposedly the longest serving police chief. The two well known police cars are the "black widow" and "silver bullet". They hang underneath an oak tree by the elementary school on a little concrete pad made 'specially for them. They primarily use a laser pointing device, so you will never see them first! Since they don't benefit the residents, please, please, please slow down and starve them of their cash flow! |

Amazing, the only reason cops write tickets is for...the sake of writing tickets. Even the citizens of the town disagree with this practice! |

Four or five years ago Lawtey got me. There were two posted speed limit signs upon entering Lawtey. I would have to have broken the laws of physics in order to reduced my speed in that short a distance. When I told the officer I was trying to slow down and obey the posted speed zone his response was, "Don't matter." That is red neck for "Doesn't matter." The total fine was $205 and four points on my driver’s license. Then he told me that if I took an on line safe drivers course it would shave the points off my license and drop the fine down to $179. But the on line course costs $29.99 and then you have to send it UPS for another $19.99. Must be a cottage industry for his bubba cousins. What a scam. STARVE THEM OUT! |

Just came through this area driving into Gainesville on 301. Waldo, Starke, and especially Lawtey pounce on out of state cars like flies on dog crap. These areas make Mayberry RFD look like Boston. Drive EXTREMELY slow through this stretch and DO NOT stop and spend a dime in these towns. They want to prey on tourists - let the tourists starve them out. They didn't get me since I had been forewarned. Even so - this kind of crap should not be allowed in America. It's backwoods extortion at it's finest. |

This little town is a blink of an eye. I was pulled over from going 30 mph in a 20 mph school zone. Where the hell was the school? It was 8 am & I was driving back home to Tampa. The officer also gave me a ticket for an obstructed plate.(another $90) That was the kick in the balls that make people avoid these little towns. I can assure you that I will never spend a $ in this little town. |
