Arg of Karim Khan (Shiraz)

The Arg of Karim Khan (Persian: ارگ کريمخاني, Citadel of Karim Khan) is a citadel located in the Northeast of Shiraz. It was built as part of a complex during the Zand dynasty and is named after Karim Khan, and served as his living quarters. It's shape resembles a medieval fortress.

The citadel was built in 1180 AH (1766-7). Karim Khan invited the best architects and Artists of the time and bought the best materials from other cities and abroad for its construction. During the Zand dynasty it was used by the king as living quarters. During the Qajar period it was used as the governor's seat.

After the fall of the Qajar dynasty it was converted into a prison. In 1971 it was given to Iran's Cultural Heritage Organization. The renovation of the citadel started in 1977. Today, Arg of Karim Khan is a museum operated by Iran's Cultural Heritage Organization.

The Arg of Karim Khan has a land area of 4000 m² and is in the center of a 12,800 m² compound. It consists of four high walls connected by four 14 m round brick towers at a 90 degree angle. Each 12m wall is 3 meters thick at the base and 2.8 meters at the top.

  • Ghasrodashti Store that sells pickles, lemon juice, syrops, etc. is a store of about 50 years of good reputation and is known almost nation-wide. Althought a lot of (smaller) competetive stoers have gradually come to existence, none of them has the standards of this store. The existence of these other stores not only has not hurt Ghasrodashti store but also it has helped it in that the street (Nasser Khossrow Street) has become a well known market for the products named above. The owner of the store, Haj Ebrahim Ghasroddashti, is one of the first people in Shiraz to open such a store, and many of his ideas have been replicated by others. He used to be the head of the unino for this business for a few years. He is still considered an authority in this business
