One of the largest steel plants of the Steel Authority of India Limited is situated here. It is surrounded by a range of hills and encircled by rivers. It is situated in an area with the richest deposit of mineral wealth in Orissa. It came into prominence in 1955, with the establishment of the Rourkela Steel Plant. The city's name is derived from the famous 'Ruhr' iron & steel belt of Germany, with whose collaboration the Rourkela Steel Plant was setup.
