This is the most famous historic icon of the Republic of
Haiti. Listed as a World Heritage site by the UNESCO, the
Citadelle Laferriere is the largest fortress in the Western
Hemisphere!! The epitome of Haiti's fortress system, the
Citadelle Laferriere was build after Haiti gained its
independence in 1804 from France. This extraordinary
fortress, who sits 900 meters above sea level, never saw
combat against the expected return of the French
invaders, but stands still as a testimony to the will of
the Haitian people and of oppressed people the world
over.
