John Burroughs School (Ladue, Missouri)

John Burroughs School is a private, secular, coed private school located in the suburb of Ladue. John Burroughs was founded in 1923 on the premise of providing an institution where young adults would receive an education that is both progressive and rigorous. Today, JBS has 590 students, in grades 7th through 12th- approximately 100 kids per class. The school employs 83 full time faculty members, 80% of whom hold advanced degrees in their field and have an average of 20.1 years of teaching experience. The tuition is $18,575 annually, with $1,510,00 distributed annually for financial aid. JBS has an operating budget of $14,788,00.
Academically, JBS students take rigorous classes in all traditional fields of academia, as well as visual and performing arts. As students get older, a wider variety of classes are made available that address a multitude of subjects, such as bioethics and urban development to name a couple. In addition to their academics, JBS students are required to participate in a sport each of the three seasons of the year.
In 2005, JBS, under headmaster Keith E. Shahan, enacted the Master Plan. The Master Plan called for massive renovation of the campus, including a new performance theater, performance gym, concert hall, parking lot and entrance, student commons, dance studio, sports fields, expansion of the dining hall, and a number of other changes to the campus.
