Delphi was platted in 1828 by General Samuel Milroy. One hundred acres was donated by William Wilson for the seat of Carroll County, named for Charles Carroll who was the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence.

The first means of transportation for Delphi was provided by the Wabash & Erie Canal in 1840. Delphi has the longest remaining section of the canal containing water (approximately 1 mile).
