Vaja

Vaja is a village in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county, in the Northern Great Plain region of eastern Hungary.
It has a population of 3798 people (2001).
Vaja was first mentioned in deeds in 1272.
Vaja's main sights:
- a castle built in the 16-17th century, nowadays it is a museum of Ádám Vay, the captain of Ferenc (Francis) II Rákóczi (Rákóczi was the leader of the Hungarian uprising against the Habsburgs in 1703-11 as the prince /fejedelem/ of the Estates Confederated for Liberty of the Kingdom of Hungary).
- a fresco painted by Ferenc Lohr on the ceiling of the banqueting hall of the castle in 1896 (on the occasion of the Hungarian Millennium)
- a statue park in the park of the castle
- a tombstone of Ádám Vay (by Barnabás Holló) in the park before the Calvinist church
- a lake with floating islands - nature reservation area.
