Te Araroa

There is a great camping ground here, right by the beach. It even has a 35mm Cinema with a Dolby sound system, although the main attraction is undoubtedly the driftwood-strewn beach and the wild waves.

A 600-year-old pohutakawa tree, reputed to be the oldest and the largest in its kind in New Zealand, stands in the school grounds at Te Araroa. The pohutukawa tree, with its brilliant crimson flowers, is unofficially New Zealand's Christmas tree.
