Former location of an America's Cash Express
On the morning of Friday, January 14, 2005, Roderick D. Jordan, 34, attempted armed robbery of this location. The cashier, Ligia Hernandez, activated the silent alarm. Fairfax County police officer Lance Guckenberger of the Mason District station responded to the call. Guckenberger was approaching the building on foot when Hernandez burst out the front door. Guckenberger escorted Hernandez to cover behind his cruiser. Immediately afterwards, Jordan exited the facility and engaged his 9mm upon the responding officer. Jordan fired eight rounds. Officer Guckenberger responded with six rounds and commanded Jordan to drop his weapon. Guckenberger, a former USMC sniper, returned fire with a seventh shot, and subdued Jordan with a hit in the leg.
This all happened in the parking lot next to five lanes of traffic. No one besides Jordan was injured.
