Once just one of the numerous fishing hamlets on the Bay of Bengal, Peria Neelankarai (translation from Tamil: Peria- Larger, Neela- Blue , Karai - Beach)or "Larger Blue Beach" is located along one of the world's longest uninterrupted stretches of sandy beach. This is one of the nesting places of the Olive Ridley sea turtle. It is located south of the famous Marina and Besant nagar beaches. The more frequented part (for swimming and leasure) of this beach is located in Chinna Neelankarai to the North. This beach was relatively less affected by the last Great Asian Tsunami.
UNFORTUNATELY THIS POTENTIALLY LOVELY BEACH IS LINED WITH "NIGHT SOIL" EVERY MORNING AS MANY PERSONS SEEM TO ENJOY AN EARLY MORNING CRAP ON THE CLEAN SAND WHILE WATCHING THE WAVES!! MORE PUBLIC TOILETS AND EDUCATION TO INCULCATE CIVIC SENSE AND HYGENE IS BADLY NEEDED….
