Officially, The Fieldhouse has room for 9,325 spectators, but there have been times when more than 10,000 fans squeezed into the 81,000-square-foot building while a thousand more stood outside in the chilly evening air.
Indiana is home to nine of the USA's 10 largest high school gyms, but The Fieldhouse is biggest of all, the massive beating heart of a town with a passion for hoops. It is home to the New Castle Chrysler High School Trojans basketball team. Built in 1959, it is the largest high school basketball gym in the world. Gym gems: The largest high school basketball gymnasium in the USA, The Fieldhouse has four concession stands, a 1/7-mile concourse running track, a 6-acre parking lot and enough room to hold half of the town's population. Memorable moment: During the 1961 sectional tournament, a blizzard struck during a Saturday evening game. Visiting fans couldn't navigate the treacherous roads, so more than 2,000 spent the night in The Fieldhouse. Local grocery stores and bakeries prepared sandwiches and doughnuts for the crowd, and on Sunday morning the radio sermon of a local minister was piped in, turning the gym into a church for one day. Names you might recognize: Two graduates — Steve Alford (1983) and Kent Benson (1973) — won Indiana's Mr. Basketball. Both went on to distinguished college careers, then played in the NBA.
