Nepatya ( Centre For Excellence In Koodiyattom ) N E P A T Y A
(Centre for Excellence in Koodiyattam) Nepatya is a centre for excellence in Koodiyattam working at Moozhikkulam, Aluva since 1998. Moozhikkulam is one of the traditionally important places for Koodiyattam, where this art form was nurtured, flourished, and developed in the last century. Many famous Chakyars belonging to Ammanoor tradition were based in this historically important village. Nepatya envisage functioning as one of the prime centers of Koodiyattam owning and inheriting this legacy, where Koodiyattam will be trained, performed and preserved in the traditional format emphasizing on the basic and characteristic aspects of this ancient art form. Also Nepatya focuses on basic research into the history and evolution of the art form, conceptualization and performing new texts and recreate old Koodiyattam performances that are not performed now. The conceptualization process includes the literary study of the text together with the study of linguistics and grammar, creating an aattaprakaram (performance text) where the focus is on the acting potential without disturbing the poetic and dramatic beauty of the text followed by rehearsing and performing. Development of new performance texts, design of costuming, (Aaharya), music designing and documenting the whole process is a significant pursuit that can enthuse and influence the whole performance scenario of Koodiyattam in the coming years. Along this format Nepatya has done the revival of Kamsavadham prabandham, Karnnabharam and Kanchukeeyam and also adapted and performed the Shakespearean play Macbeth into Koodiyattam form in the previous years and these performances were accepted and acknowledged by critics and connoisseurs of Koodiyattam. Nepatya has collaborated with International centre for Koodiyattam, Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit Kalady in these projects. Also a six week appreciation course in Koodiyattam was organised By Nepatya at Moozhikkulam for local people. During these four years this center was trying to preserve the rare and core acting methods and concepts of Koodiyattam and performed several rare items in different parts of Kerala. This center is teaching Vesham (Male &Female) and Mizhavu (instrument). The Mukhya Aacharya of the institution is the famous Koodiyattam artist Guru Moozhikkulam Kochukuttan chakyar and his disciple Margi Madhu. Margi Madhu is an important practicing Koodiyattam artist who also has participated and presented papers in International Seminars, and published articles and books on Koodiyattam. Madhu has traveled and performed all over India and also abroad including Japan, USA, Singapore, Germany, France, Italy UK etc. (See bio-data for details) Nepatya is registered trust under the act….. in 2004. Besides Guru Moozhikkulam Kochukuttan chakyar and Margi Madhu, there are two drummers in Mizhavu, two senior female (acting) students, two junior Mizhavu students and two junior male (acting) students who are residing and studying here. The Proposed project Now Nepatya ahs a performance repertory comprising of Guru Moozhikkulam Kochukuttan Chakyar and his disciple Margi Madhu and two Mizhavu artists and who were trained in Kalamandalam. Also there are two senior performing artists (female) and two junior acting students (male) and two Mizhavu students. Daily classes on vesham and Mizhavu are ongoing and the students residing in the centre. Nepatya has bought 6 Mizhavu and costumes for three vesham. Also Nepatya has a Kalari where training and performance can take place. Nepatya would like to have monthly performances on Koodiyattam for the next two years where free lance Koodiyattam artists who are not linked to any of the specific performance centre and helped by any source of funding will be involved. Also new and uprising young artists will be included in these programs so that they are given a chance to perform along with the gurus of Koodiyattam and are supported. Nepatya also will conceptualize and perform (evolve aattaprakaram, perform and document) a new Koodiyattam based on Doothaghatolkacham by Bhasa in this year. Also we plan to have lecture demonstration programs so as to help the local people understand Koodiyattam better and evolve performance literacy in Koodiyattam in the state. Publication of materials on Koodiyattam also is in the stream. For all activities and to make Nepatya continue to work efficiently, support and funding is needed. We request your organization to help us by financial support and grant for the salary of Guru Kochukuttan Chakyar, the stipend of the students, for organizing and remuneration of artists, for the monthly performances, and for documentation and the expenses for the lecture demonstrations. An approximate budget is attached below.
