Godalming

Godalming (GOD-al-ming) is a small town in Surrey. It has two rail stations, several state (Broadwater, Busbridge Infant, Busbridge CofE Junior, Moss Lane, etc) and private (Charterhouse, Prior's Field, St Hilary's, etc) schools, the "Pepperpot" (formerly the town hall), and various other locations.

Actually, most towns in the UK have stations, or 'parkway' stations (stations serving the town which aren't actually in it). There are many cases of more than one station: often because the stations are on two separate lines which cross over each other: (loads of examples: Wakefield, Farnborough, Dorking, Canterbury, Newark-on-Trent, Warrington, Runcorn), or if we have a mainline 'parkway' station and a branch line 'central' station (Bristol, Exeter, Bodmin, Rugeley, Litchfield, Stourbridge).
In Godalming, this station simply has two stations on the same line. Apparently, Farncombe (the north station) was built "at the instigation of General Sir Frederick Marshall, a director of the London and South Western Railway Company, who lived nearby at Broadwater"
