Angono, Rizal
Angono is a 1st class urban municipality in the province of Rizal, Philippines. It is located 30km East of Manila. According to the 2000 census, it has a population of 74,668 people in 15,740 households. First created as a pueblo in 1766, Angono became a municipality in 1935. Angono was home to two National Artist of the Philippines awardees, Carlos V. Francisco for Painting (1973) and Lucio D. San Pedro for Music (1991). It is also known for the Philippines' oldest prehistoric work of art, the Angono Petroglyphs although it sits along the boundaries of Angono, Binangonan and Antipolo of the province of Rizal. There are several art galleries and studios in Angono and here is a list of some of them: Blanco Family Museum, Nemiranda Arthouse & Gallery, Tiamson Art Gallery, Ang Nuno Artists Foundation Gallery, Village Artist Gallery, Juban Studio, Vicente Reyes Art Studio, the Second Gallery, and the Angono Ateliers Gallery. Pope Clement I, locally known as San Clemente, is the patron saint of Angono and like in most Philippine towns, a feast in his honor is celebrated annually. This celebration, every November 23 is highlighted by a fluvial procession locally known as "Pagoda", and is participated in by townsfolk and tourists alike. It is now commonly called the "Higantes Festival." This yearly event is usually covered by Philippine media such as ABS-CBN, GMA Network and DZRH. For a taste of exotic food, there is the Balaw-Balaw Restaurant, which is also an art gallery, right across the Nemiranda Art Cafe and Restaurant. The former's name was derived from the local side dish mainly made from fermented small shrimp. Besides the famous Balaw-Balaw Restaurant's cuisine, Angono is also known for its tasty fried itik. Local Filipino snacks can also be found at the Angono Public Market. Angono is politically subdivided into 10 barangays.
