Sacred Heart Medical Center
This hospital was founded near the Spokane River by the Sisters of Providence lead by Sister Joseph, in the late 1800's. The sisters' mission was to provide health care for all, especially the poor. In the early 1900's they built a new hospital on the lower south hill. It now is the largest medical facility in Spokane and the only hospital to have a psychiatric unit for both adults and adolescents. Sister Peter Claver, who was CEO for 25 years, stepped down in the 1990's. The nuns no longer have an active role in managing the hospital, and one of it's key missions, to serve the poor, has all been eliminated by the bean counters that operate it now. Sister Peter Claver is probably rolling over in her grave.
